Day 37 - The Really Far Side

Today, we rode a very remote area of Brasil.  A beautiful red dirt road, intensely green vegetation, tall palm trees everywhere, ponds, rivers, lots of rickety wooded bridges in really bad shape, no people, no cars, perfectly formed white clouds, and a deep blue sky.

It was like the world was smiling just for me. Like the trees on both sides of the road were just looking down and waiving as I went by. Harmony everywhere.

As we were approaching Oiapoke, I got my first flat tire of the trip ... and, when forced to stop in the middle of this thick jungle, the sounds all around you were so pure and hypnotic ... birds, things moving in the brush ... the wind.

We made it to Oiapoque in early afternoon to find out that our hotel reservations were never made and the hotel did not have enough rooms for us ... but, as with anything, it was just the universe helping us find a better place on the outskirts of t own, with a great swimming pool and great staff.

Oiapoque is a frontier town on the banks of the beautiful Oyapok River, a few kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean.  From the shore, you can see the beautiful Calatrava-like bridge that connect Brasil and French Guiana.

Not a lot to do or see in this town other than a great collection of colorful old wooden boats on the shore and lots of people just hanging around.

We plan to be at the border as it opens at 8am tomorrow morning.  We should be in Cayenne, the Capital of French Guiana by early afternoon.

A quick break in Calçoene, a few km North of Amapa

Back to our good old red dirt, dust, heat, and jungle

The jungle here is very luscious and thick and tropical

This is really really remote - feels very isolated and wild

Lots of rickety bridges again but these were in really bad shape

Many indigenous "Aldeas" along this route

Government protection of these villages

Oops - my first flat tire in the jungle

We made it - the Brasil-Guiana border bridge in the background

This town is called Oiapoque and the river is the Oyapok River

Lots of wooden colorful boats on the shores

The massive pool slide in our hotel : )

"To infinity and beyond"
